#GivingTuesday: Giving Back for a Better World

November 29, 2016

giving-tuesday-11-29Everyone has the power to make the world a better place.

This concept is the cornerstone of the growing social movement #GivingTuesday, which takes place today, November 29. #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and partnership. The idea is simple: in the midst of consumer-driven events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday encourages people to come together and celebrate acts of generosity and kindness, no matter how large or how small.

As a movement, #GivingTuesday doesn’t actually accept donations. It aims to connect donors with non-profits and spread the general spirit of giving. There are so many reasons to give, especially around the holidays. Our world is facing serious challenges, including poverty and food shortages. There are people in need in almost every community.

Giving doesn’t need to cost money and can fit into your busy schedule. Everyone has something to give, whether it’s helping a child with their homework, lending a hand to an elderly neighbor or buying a coffee for the person in line behind you at Starbucks. If everyone contributed one act of kindness this #GivingTuesday, imagine how many people would have a better day!

I’m proud to work for a company like Konica Minolta, whose philosophy revolves around creating value for society. We place giving at the very core of our organization by offering solutions to make our customers’ lives easier. At the highest level of our global business, we are researching and developing green products that help our customers reduce their environmental impact. We also work with our suppliers to help them reduce their footprint.

I’m constantly inspired by the kindness and generosity displayed by our employees. Whether it’s donating books to support underprivileged students, building a home through Habitat for Humanity, or growing moustaches to raise awareness for men’s health, Konica Minolta employees are always willing to contribute to the greater good. It’s this spirit of giving and teamwork that makes our world a better place.

This September, I was thrilled to volunteer on a community farm with a team of my colleagues. We spent the day harvesting nutritious vegetables and delivering them to a local foodbank. This focus on giving is shared all the way up to our CEO and President, Rick Taylor, who was named Humanitarian of the Year by the Mahwah (NJ) Chamber of Commerce for his work to raise funds for children’s cancer research.

We give back at Konica Minolta year round. Now, this #GivingTuesday, take a moment to think about what you can do to give back. Whether the gesture is large or small, every act of kindness makes the world a better place. I look forward to the New Year and to continuing to serve our customers and community in 2017.
