Konica Minolta Given the Highest Evaluation by CDP and Included on the Climate A List 2021

Recognized as a Global Leader in Combating Climate Change

Tokyo (January 18, 2022) – Konica Minolta, Inc. (Konica Minolta) has been awarded a global leadership position on the Climate A List by CDP, an international not-for-profit organization engaged in activities to realize a sustainable economy, for the sixth time.

CDP Worldwide-Japan will host an online event to commend the companies included in CDP’s Climate A List 2021 on January 19, 2022, in which Mr. Shoei Yamana, President of Konica Minolta, will deliver a speech as a representative of one of the A List companies.

The Climate A List

The Climate A List is composed of companies that have been recognized as global leaders in terms of goals set and actions taken to combat climate change and disclosure of information. Of some 12,000 companies around the world that were covered by CDP’s survey, 204 companies (including 56 Japanese companies) were included on the Climate A List this year in recognition of their efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, mitigate climate change and contribute to a low-carbon economy.

Konica Minolta considers its response to climate change and disclosure of information on the process and results of its response were reasons for its inclusion on the Climate A List.

Konica Minolta’s Approach to Climate Change Problems

With the establishment of its long-term management vision and the DX2022 medium-term business strategy, Konica Minolta has committed to achieving carbon minus* status ahead of schedule, by 2030 instead of 2050.

The company is determined to promote on-demand production, workstyle reform and edge computing to depart from the conventional business model of mass production and mass disposal, and contribute to accelerating the shift towards a paperless society and reducing energy usage in a digital society.

By promoting digital transformation (DX), the company is speeding up its efforts to work with more companies, including customers and business partners, to reduce environmental impacts more extensively. To be specific, the company aims to significantly reduce its environmental footprint and strengthen the bottom line by digitalizing its “green supplier activities” to share its environmental expertise with suppliers, and to successfully operate the Environmental Digital Platform launched in June 2020, thereby realizing sustainable growth.

*Carbon minus represents Konica Minolta’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions throughout its business activities to a level exceeding the CO2 emissions of the entire lifecycle of its products by working with stakeholders, such as business partners and customers.

Accelerating a Shift to Renewable Energy

In January 2019, Konica Minolta joined RE100, a global leadership initiative that brings together businesses committed to sourcing 100% renewable energy for their operations. Konica Minolta aims to procure 100% of the power used in its own business activities from renewable energy sources by 2050. Starting with countries and regions where renewable electricity is relatively widespread, Konica Minolta has been reviewing its power procurement contracts one by one at its production and sales sites and switching over to renewable electricity where possible.

Already, Konica Minolta Business Technologies (Dongguan) Co., Ltd. and Konica Minolta Business Technologies (Wuxi) Co., Ltd., which are Konica Minolta’s MFP production sites in China, achieved the goal of shifting to 100% renewable electricity in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Furthermore, a new factory of Konica Minolta Mechatronics Co., Ltd. built in Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture in February 2021 is expected to procure approximately 17% of the electricity used for its operation from its photovoltaic system.

In addition to these production sites, Konica Minolta’s sales companies in Germany, the U.K. and Austria have switched to renewable energy, while the head office of Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc., which had generated electricity to power its operation with its photovoltaic system, switched its remaining purchased electricity to power derived from renewable energy in 2020 and now uses 100% renewable energy. Konica Minolta’s efforts to facilitate the shift to renewable energy made further progress in fiscal 2020, with its sales companies in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Lithuania going renewable.

Konica Minolta will accelerate the shift to renewable energy more widely at its global business sites in a manner best suited to local conditions.
